In a past, here was a center of a small country (Japan consisted of many small countries at that time) which located in this area. “Joka machi” means a small town which surrounded a castle, and was often busy of many markets or other business. But unfortunately, this joka machi was surrounded by a big pond or more like river and people had to take boats to get there. This was really annoying, because this river often overflew and people can not take boats. Thus a big strong bridge was needed for people to get to joka mechi.
